Six months after cooking up a delectable season for her Nebraska women’s basketball program, Connie Yori got her dessert.

And, yes, it included lots of whipped cream and cherries.

On Thursday, NU athletic director Steve Pederson announced the school and Yori had come to terms on a new five-year contract worth a guaranteed $375,000 annually. Yori — who has led the Huskers to four straight postseason berths, including last year’s NCAA Tournament — will receive a $225,000 base salary, and another $150,000 from outside sources.

“We believe we are doing the right things to grow a strong and lasting tradition for women’s basketball success here at the University of Nebraska,” Yori said. “Our administration has shown the highest levels of commitment to our program. We look forward to continuing the growth over the next few years and setting even higher standards of success for our players.”

Yori’s new deal replaces her original contract that was set to expire on June 30, 2008, and is retroactive to July 1, 2007.

Last year, Nebraska went 22-10 (one win shy of the school record), finished tied for fourth in the Big 12 Conference and made its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2000.

Yori came to NU from Creighton, and after going 8-20 with a team that, at times, had just five scholarship players, has slowly turned the Huskers around.

Before last year’s breakthrough season, Nebraska had appeared in three straight postseason WNIT tournaments.

“Coach Yori has done an excellent job of re-establishing our women’s basketball program. She inherited this program at the most difficult time in our history of women’s basketball,” Pederson said. “From the day she arrived, she immediately went to work building a program of which all Nebraskans can be proud.

“Not only has she re-established success on the court, but the successes of her student-athletes in the classroom, and off the court, have been superb. We are pleased that she has agreed to remain at Nebraska to build upon the success that she has already brought to this program.”
