OMAHA — Some students groups are upset that the University of Nebraska at Omaha has banned the sale of homemade baked goods on campus.

The cookies, brownies and other treats were typically sold by student organizations as part of their fundraising efforts. Students have complained that the new policy cuts off that funding source.

UNO officials said the ban was put in place due to concerns about food allergies and contaminated food, although there had been no reports of contamination.

Katie Dowd, president of the campus’ Public Relations Student Society of America, said her group raised about $1,500 a year by selling monthly bake sales. That money was used for conferences and other activities.

Dowd called the ban a “big blow” to the group.

The University of Nebraska Medical Center is considering a similar ban on baked goods at its campus. The other two campuses in the Nebraska system do not have policies on baked goods.

" I feel like this is an underhanded move meant to prevent people from eating too many baked goods. Enjoying a freshly baked item such as a muffin, cookie, cake, pie or roll is one of the delights of being an American, living in a free country. Let the kids sell their cookies! "

" Way too many things in the US are over-regulated and our freedoms are being taken away little by little. Let the buyers decide if they want to eat the food that is sold. We are becoming more and more afraid to live and afraid of a lawsuit. Whatever happened to "live and let live"? "

" People with fool allergies take the risk every day and are used to it. Everyone takes a risk when buying home-made goods, whether its food, clothes, incense, whatever. This just forces people to spend money supporting some corporation or company rather than giving all their money to the group or cause of their choice. "

" Ok, who got caught selling "special" brownies and ruined it for the rest of us? "

" Imagine where the girl scouts would have been today without it, or your high school band, or the PTA, or the church bingo night, or ... there are too many to mention. Good thinking on this one. Now there is going to be an underground black market for baked goods, leading our future into the underworld of criminal baking and frosting conspiracies. What a crock. Grow a brain or get out of the way. "

" I wonder how many people that actually have food allergies are behind this. Personally, I would guess none. I know alot of people that have allergies and are always smart enough to ask if a certain item is included or not. Sounds to me that its less of another freedom being "stripped away", but more of another case of the ultra-paranoia in this country about being sued for someone elses mistake or short insight and general lack of willingness to take any form of responsibility at all.
