The Nebraska State Patrol troopers handed out 50 speeding tickets within 2½ hours during a special enforcement effort in a construction zone on Interstate 80.

State Patrol Spokeswoman Deb Collins said the enforcement effort was Wednesday between 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of I-80, near the 27th Street exit.

She said troopers, assisted by the Nebraska State Patrol Air Wing, made 71 contacts and cited  50 people with speeding 15 mph or more above the 55 mph, posted speed limit.

Troopers also wrote tickets for a variety of other offenses, including no operator’s license, driving under suspension, fictitious plates and no proof of insurance.

" I am all in favor of curbing speeding in construction zones, the problem I have is when construction has ended yet they keep the signs up for months after the work has been done. For example the Rosa Parks Way over pass on Hwy77 was done for almost 8 months before the construction zone signs came down. I feel that makes people more likely to ignore the signs when they see that they aren't always accurate. "

" that is just outrageous that 50 people would speed during that time period i am glad that you guys are cleaning up the streets for all of Lincoln. "

" Finally! It's about time they are out there ticketing people. People need to slow down in construction zones! "

" Thanks to the State Patrol. More of this is needed. "

" Thank you for finally enforcing this! I travel this stretch every weekday for work and am constantly being passed or tailgated by folks who are going much faster than I am. It's frustrating when you are going the speed limit and you feel like you're holding up traffic by obeying the law. Thank you again, and please do it again soon! "

Nina wrote on October 5, 2007 2:38 pm:
" Now that's the way to fill the state's coffers. Let those who deserve it do the paying. They know better. We all need to be trustworthy to obey speed limits as well as other laws, even when no one is looking. And when someone IS looking, well, getting caught is WHOSE fault? "

" I'm on this stretch of I-80 often and have been amazed at the people zooming by with no regard for the workers and/or the posted speed limit signs. I'm all for a little breathing room where speed limits are concerned, but most of these drivers have been likely driving 70-75 mph in a 55 mph zone. Good work to the State Patrol! "

Dano wrote on October 5, 2007 2:59 pm:
" It doesn't do any good if they only do it once in a great while. They should do this more often and more people would start obeying these zones. "

" People need to slow down PERIOD! I cant go anywhere anymore with out somebody riding my bumper or flying by me at 10-15 over the limit...... "

" Not only construction zones it needs to be all over on I80. Seems everyone thinks the speed limit is somewhere between 80-100 mph form York to Omaha. "

Comm UnSense wrote on October 5, 2007 3:53 pm:
" Now move to the construction zone on I-80 over the Platte. Try driving the posted 55 there and you'll get run over. But, to date, I have not seen a patrolman in that stretch and I drive through it 6 times every week. "

Oh Yeah... wrote on October 5, 2007 3:57 pm:
" So, they only targeted those going 15+ MPH over the posted construction zone speed limit? Just how fast do you need to be going in a regular zone before you get stopped? I remember when the leeway was 10+ MPH highway, 5+ MPH city. Why even have a speed limit when so many can flount it? "

" I drove through this area on my commute home and I couldn't believe the number of cars pulled over. Maybe some of those people who ride my tail got their just desserts! (: Well done NSP! "

Bob wrote on October 5, 2007 4:35 pm:
" Just 50 speeding tickets in 2 and half hours? They could have done this in just the first hour alone if they want to. "

pac wrote on October 5, 2007 4:38 pm:
" They need to do this more often - I travel this stretch of I-80 every weekday, and cars are flying by me as I go 60 mph (which is in and of itself speeding in this construction zone). Thank you State Patrol! "

Laurie wrote on October 5, 2007 4:52 pm:
" There's no excuse for breaking the law and if you speed you should expect to get caught, but I have noticed that eastbound between Lincoln and Omaha it is 65, then 75, then 65, then 75, then 65, then 75, then 65, then 55, then 75, and finally 65 when you get to the coffeepot. This is dumb. I can see why people get cavalier about the limit. "

Dean wrote on October 5, 2007 5:18 pm:
" It could be done it every day on either I-80 or Highway 2. I have driven Highway 2 daily for 10 years and could count on one hand the number of times I've seen speed checks done. "

" Excuse me "bballballer" it wasn't the streets of Lincoln, it was construction area on I 80!! Anyway its about time that race track get patrolled! "

Atl wrote on October 6, 2007 8:18 am:
" What???? Are you serious? This is why lincoln will always stay a small town mentality. Most cities that I haved lived in have a sign posted saying "speeding fines increased when workers are present" why not do that?? Let people do the speed limit or more it's not like there is anything to really look at while driving in that part of the town. Oh wait the Anderson Ford sign is there, that's right. Maybe we can start complaining about that again. All this will ever be is a money maker. It's not like there are kids stealing guns or anything. Maybe they took all of the drug dealers off the street and this was the last result. "

JG wrote on October 6, 2007 9:58 am:
" I am VERY happy to hear about this! My daughter drives this stretch every school day, several times a day to get back and forth to school. Because she is a new driver, I have personally driven her myself lots of times and yes, this area is notorious for speeders! Just yesterday I had to deal with people going well over 65 or 70 in the areas marked 55 now...It is one thing to go '5 over' but when you are blasting other cars away when passing them...that is too much! Good job law enforcement!! Keep up the good work! "

alex wrote on October 6, 2007 11:19 am:
" use mass transit and there wont be speeders. save the planet and your checkbook. This would also give the "state" polce (police state) less chances to infringe on our rights "

ian wrote on October 6, 2007 11:30 am:
" if they were really serious about stopping speeding they would raise ticket fines to $500 per offense. "

Bob wrote on October 6, 2007 11:58 am:
" I have no problem with the cops giving out tickets for the speeders that ZOOM through the construction zones while the workers are tring to do their jobs. But I think that when the construction workers are done for the day they should bump up the speed limit. I have seen in other states that post a sign that says speed limit is XX while workers are working. "

Henri wrote on October 6, 2007 3:42 pm:
" Now if they will just start getting these people who go way under the speed limit and keep people from being on time behind them. Most of these people are just to old to be driving at all. Its Lincolns dirty little secret of the road. "

Roger wrote on October 6, 2007 3:47 pm:
" First this is not a Lincoln thing. This is a state law, not a Licncoln law. Second for all of those in a hurry, think about the time you save in this area you are travelling. Say you go the 10 to 15 miles and hour over the limit, and do it through this small stretch. You may save at least 30 to 60 seconds on your trip through this area of construction. Is this worth the workers lives you are risking? Just a little food for thought. "

" its time to do that same enforcement but a little west on 1-80 near 77 south exit & NW 48th both EB & WB traffic, you are doing 55 heading on the interstate & EB traffic is still going strong @ 75!!! I've had some near misses & many a bird thrown my way, slow down people! "

too many zones wrote on October 7, 2007 2:44 am:
" I agree, slow down while workers are present and let us drive when they are not. The speed limits are ridiculous on I80, 55 - 60 -65- 75-65 ...every mile you go you have to change your speed. Hard on the gas tank, get real!!! "

nebkan wrote on October 7, 2007 3:59 am:
" The reason they leave construction signs up for long periods after they are done with the work is so they can get more money for the state when they catch speeders in construction zones, since fines are doubled in construction zones.....They do the same here in Kansas...Not griping about the cops, just the state leaders way to collect more $$$.... "

whatever wrote on October 7, 2007 8:42 pm:
" Largely a PR stunt I suspect. If the State Patrol was doing it's job in this area of enforcement there would not be a problem. "
