The Lincoln Saltdogs outlasted the Blacksnakes 3-1 in 11 innings on Sunday in St. Joseph, Mo., to avoid the three-game sweep.

It’s was a solid pitching duel between the starters. Lincoln’s Kyle Ruwe, who pitched eight innings, gave up three hits, and had eight strikeouts, and St. Joseph’s Andrew Edwards (7 1/3 einnings, three hits, five strikeouts), but neither factored into the decision as the game went extra innings. In the 11th, a leadoff walk and three straight singles from the middle of Lincoln’s lineup led to the go-ahead runs. Lincoln closer Matt Varner struck out two batters and pitched a perfect bottom of the inning to clinch the win.

Mark Roberts (2-1) picked up the win for Saltdogs. Varner got the save, his ninth of the year.

" We're still on top in the North, and we've got a big three-game series coming up against the Canaries this week that should help put some distance between us and #2. Go Dogs! "

" And another three-game series next week. A sweep and a sweep would do a lot towards winning the first half. "

" This should be the beginning of a strong stretch run to end the first half. Hopefully the pitching will hold up. "
