Men arrested after fight at Big Indian Lake

Three Blue Springs men were arrested Sunday after an alleged assault at Big Indian Lake in Gage County.
Around 1:10 a.m., Beatrice Dispatch received a 911 call about an assault at the lake, which is near Wymore, according to the Gage County Sheriff’s Office.
Martin Lopez Jr., 20, was allegedly causing problems at the beach camping area. He left the area, and the 911 caller was able to provide a license plate number of the pickup he was driving.
After a short period, the pickup returned to the lake area. Martin Lopez Jr., Martin Lopez Sr., 41, and Richard Mayhew, 45, got out and again allegedly began assaulting the victims of the earlier alleged assault, a group of adult men from Kansas who were camping in the area.
A sheriff’s deputy who had responded to the original call tried to break up the fight and was shoved to the ground, receiving minor injuries. Once the deputy was able to get between the people in the fight, the three suspects got into their pickup and left the area.
A short time later, an officer from the Wymore Police Department spotted the pickup, and, with the help of a backup deputy, made a felony traffic stop south of Wymore.
The suspects were arrested on suspicion of assault of a peace officer, two counts of third-degree assault, criminal mischief and terroristic threats. Third-degree assault of a peace officer is a Class 3A felony.
The younger Lopez also was arrested on suspicion of minor in possession of alcohol. He was taken to the Beatrice Community Hospital to be treated for a head injury he received at the lake.
Afterward, all three suspects were lodged at the Gage County Detention Center.
