Huskers advance three on first day of NCAA meet
By staff and wire reports
Louisiana State’s Trindon Holliday emphatically stamped his name on the list of rising young American sprinters with the third fastest time in the world this year.
Nebraska advanced three athletes through the preliminaries: seniors Dace Ruskule (the defending discus champion) and Daniel Roper (long jump), and sophomore Brysun Stately (pole vault).
Holliday, an LSU sophomore, was clocked in 10.02 seconds in the 100-meter semifinals Wednesday night at the NCAA track and field championships in Sacramento, Calif. Holliday outshone the better-known Walter Dix of Florida State in the semis on the opening day of the four-day competition at Sacramento State.
Dix, the collegiate record holder and reigning NCAA champ at 200 meters, won his heat at 10.13, easing off at the finish. The two will square off in the finals on Friday.
Jangy Addy of Tennessee had a 141-point lead over defending champion Jake Arnold of Arizona halfway through the decathlon.
After five events on the opening day of the NCAA meet, the SEC champion Addy had 4,211 points to Arnold’s 4,070. Joe Detmer of Wisconsin was third at 3,990.
NU sophomore Skylar Reising is in 13th place with 3,717 points. Teammate Lee Martin, a senior, is 20th.
Nebraska freshman Scott Wims qualified for the semifinals in the 100-meter dash. He didn’t finish in the top four of his preliminary heat to automatically qualify, but time was among the next six best, allowing him to advance. He failed to qualify for the finals despite a personal-best time of 10.32 seconds, good for sixth place on the Husker charts.
No final events were on Wednesday’s schedule in the meet that features 1,088 athletes from Division I schools.
