OMAHA — At funeral services Thursday, law enforcement officers, judges and prosecutors who crossed his path came to honor a Douglas County sheriff’s deputy killed by a suspected drunk driver.

Shad Nicks, 36, of Omaha, was off-duty, riding his motorcycle on U.S. highway 6 when he was struck nearly head-on by an Oldsmobile driven by Heather Henning of Papillion, the Nebraska State Patrol said.

Nicks died at the hospital. Henning, 27, was treated and released. She was then arrested on charges of felony motor vehicle homicide and driving while intoxicated, the patrol said.

Of the 400 people at the funeral services Thursday, nearly half were law enforcement officers from Omaha, Valley, Blair, La Vista, Council Bluffs and Douglas, Sarpy and Washington Counties.

Several spoke at the funeral, and said Nicks loved his family and was passionate about law enforcement.

“Shad never met a stranger. You were only ever one conversation from being Shad’s friend,” said the Rev. Tom Fraley.

Nicks’ wife, Becky, gave birth to their daughter Allison three weeks ago. They also have two sons, Brandon, 6, and Ryan, 4.

" As a police officer, it is always hard for me to read about officers killed, whether in the line of duty of while off-duty. This is why DWI enforcement is such a huge deal. My thoughts and prayers go to the family of the lost Deputy. "
