Sooner softball team exploits NU mistakes
By the Lincoln Journal Star
The Nebraska softball team gave No. 4 Oklahoma some help, and the Sooners took advantage.
The Huskers gave a powerful Oklahoma lineup an extra out in the third inning, and that was all OU needed. The Sooners scored four unearned runs with two outs in the decisive inning to earn a two-game sweep of the Huskers with a 5-1 win on Sunday in Norman, Okla.
In the third, a single, an error and a fielder’s choice where no out was recorded put a pair of Sooners on first and second. Two outs later, OU’s Susan Ogen hit a double to give the Sooners a 2-1 lead.
Nebraska jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in its first at bat. Senior Devin Porter worked for a two-out walk before sophomore Crystal Carwile ripped an 0-2 pitch to the gap in right center for a run-scoring double.
But that was all the offense NU could squeeze out one day after scoring nine runs in a 10-9 loss to the Sooners (47-5, 12-3).
Husker sophomore pitcher Molly Hill allowed one earned run and pitched a complete game.
The Huskers (34-15, 6-7) missed a golden opportunity to extend their lead in the top of the second. An error, a single and a hit batter loaded the bases with only one out before the next two batters both struck out.
The loss was the Huskers’ 10th consecutive setback to a top-five foe since 2004.
