Sites for 2007 NCAA volleyball regionals announced
For Nebraska to repeat as national champion in 2007, the Huskers will have to win four straight matches beyond the borders of the Cornhusker State.
In announcing Florida, Penn State, Stanford and Wisconsin as sites for this fall’s NCAA regionals on Wednesday, the Division I Women’s Volleyball Committee passed over Nebraska’s bid to host matches at the NU Coliseum.
NU assistant AD Butch Hug said Qwest Center Omaha, where Nebraska played before postseason record crowds in 2005 and 2006, was not available due to a scheduling conflict the weekend of Dec. 7-8, the dates of this year’s regionals.
The final four returns to Qwest Center Omaha in 2008.
This year’s final four will be played in Sacramento, Calif., meaning Stanford, last year’s national runnerup, won’t have to board an airplane the final two weeks of the postseason.
Florida is the first school since the advent of pre-determined host sites to stage a regional for the second consecutive year. Nebraska won last year’s Gainesville Regional, advancing to the final four for the first time in school history by winning a regional on the road.
Penn State was also a host in 2005. Wisconsin is hosting a pre-determined regional for the first time, although the Badgers did play in Green Bay, Wis., in 2004.
