Only one new name emerged in the race for mayor and City Council when the deadline for filing passed Friday afternoon.

Mike Deal joined the race for mayor under the Nebraska Party, which is based on the philosophy of Thomas Jefferson.

Deal did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment, but the Nebraska Party’s Web site says it was established to restore economic prosperity to all Nebraskans, restore the “Christian principles of our forefathers,” and get the government back in the hands of the people.

Lincoln Airport Authority

There are two open positions on the Lincoln Airport Authority Board, one for a four-year term and one for a six-year term. Candidates who filed:

Four-year term

* Chris Hove (Republican), 2402 Ridge Road, Lincoln

* Tony Kemna (Democrat), 2435 C St., Lincoln

Six-year term

* Edward P. Raines (Republican), 6515 Leesburg St., Lincoln

* Barney C. Helton (Democrat), 2301 Ryons St., Lincoln

The other official candidates for mayor are:

* Republican Ken Svoboda

* Democrat Chris Beutler

* Independent Roger Yant

Mayoral candidates had to gather the signatures of 300 Lincoln residents and pay a $100 filing fee in order to get on the ballot. Election Commissioner David Shively said Deal and Yant’s signatures continued to trickle in on Friday, but by the 5 p.m. deadline they’d been verified.

Those competing to take Councilwoman Patte Newman’s place on the City Council representing northeast Lincoln, District 1, are retired postmaster Doug Emery, a Democrat, and Republican businesswoman LaRae Eifert.

Three people will be on the ballot to represent southeast Lincoln, or District 2: Former public works director Allan Abbott, an independent, Republican incumbent Jon Camp and Republican clinical social worker Jane Kinsey.

Democratic incumbent Jonathan Cook, a computer software developer, will be challenged by Republican John Erickson to represent southwest Lincoln, or District 3. Erickson is a policy adviser to Gov. Dave Heineman.

And the departure of one candidate to represent northwest Lincoln leaves just two candidates for District 4: Incumbent Democrat Annette McRoy, who works in real estate, and Republican John Spatz, legal counsel for the Nebraska Association of School Boards.

City Council candidates had to gather 150 signatures from residents of their district and pay a $25 filing fee to get on the ballot.

All of these candidates will be on the ballot in the April 3 primary election, where the top two vote-getters advance to the May 1 general election.

" Well I was sure hoping for a few more candidates, with the hope of a larger/bigger/better debate. Usually, the more the better. I'm afraid it looks too much like the same ole group. Yes, I put Chris B. in that bunch. Talk about someone who has been around the block a few times without many new ideas for fixing old problems. The bright side of the story is the current mayor will soon be gone. That can't happen soon enough. "

" I am encouraged and hopeful for a wonderfully growing city. Elected officials will make mistakes, but few of them have their own self interest to promote. I'm looking forward to having Chris B as my mayor. "

" I for one would like to see some of the letter-writers and bloggers in the races. We have all the ideas, after all, we should run things! Oh, I guess its that one only needs to see what the general public, political hack groups (whose name rhymes with "BIBA") and the press does candidates who dare throw their hat in the ring or get elected. Why would anyone want to run for office in the climate that exists today? Just read the blogs with people whining about taxes and their property tax burden (only 14% of which is the city) but still expecting potholes filled, snow removed, expressways built, free parking and instant service for whatever complaint they have. Also, how many of the folks in the employ of the LJS have been popped for DUI? Yet we read story after story about Nankes. Where was the paper on this DUI issue for Shrub and Kermit (the senator, not the frog)? Negative, negative, negative. Thank goodness for everyone who has the guts to run and serve. Demo, Repellican or nutcase, at least they are all stepping up to the plate. Here's to ya! "
