Season-opening tourney not part of volleyball ticket package
Nebraska volleyball ticketholders, take note. If you want to catch the Huskers’ home opener next fall, you have some work to do this weekend.
In confirming what everyone already knew — that Nebraska would be playing in the season-opening AVCA Showcase on Aug. 24-25 at Qwest Center Omaha — the American Volleyball Coaches Association announced Tuesday that tickets will be available only through Ticketmaster and thus will not be included in NU’s season-ticket package.
Showcase tickets — $39 or $32, including handling charges — will go on sale Saturday at noon at Ticketmaster.com, by phone at 475-1212 and at Ticketmaster outlets including the Nebraska Union, Pershing Center, Younkers and Russ’s Market locations in Lincoln.
The Showcase will be Nebraska’s first action since winning the national championship at Qwest Center Omaha last December.
“‘O! What a city’ is the Omaha slogan, and ‘O! What a venue’ could be the slogan for the Qwest Center during a women’s volleyball match,” said Kathy DeBoer, the AVCA’s executive director. “The unparalleled enthusiasm of the community for the sport of volleyball made our decision on a return visit a very simple one.”
This year’s tournament will be the second AVCA Showcase in three years to be played at Qwest Center Omaha.
The 2005 tournament drew a total attendance of 20,604, including 10,576 for the championship match.
Last winter’s NCAA championship match at the Qwest Center drew a record crowd of 17,209.
In both instances, NU season ticketholders were given the opportunity to purchase tickets before they went on sale to the general public.
Matches on Friday, Aug. 24, will pit UCLA against Utah and Nebraska against Tennessee, with consolation and championship matches set for Saturday, Aug. 25.
Match times will be announced at a later date.
