NU sweeps San Diego

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The NCAA Final Four in Omaha is now just one win and a 60-mile bus ride away for the Nebraska volleyball team.
The top-ranked Huskers blew through their opening match at the Gainesville Regional on Friday, sweeping the same San Diego team against which Nebraska opened the season with a three-game victory.
Sarah Pavan had 14 kills and Nebraska’s serving and passing were dominant in a 30-21, 30-20, 30-15 win at the O’Connell Center. The Huskers (30-1) will face the winner of Friday night’s Florida-Minnesota match for the regional title on Saturday at 3 p.m.
ESPNU will televise the match, which will determine the first of the four qualifiers for the Final Four.
San Diego (26-6) struggled to muster any kind of a threat against the Huskers. Nebraska forced six early hitting errors in building a 14-9 lead in game one and answered the Toreros’ only challenge with back-to-back dumps from setter Rachel Holloway.
Jordan Larson served back-to-back aces in game one, becoming just the second Husker in the last 15 years to join Nebraska’s all-time top 10 for service aces.
Game two began with back-to-back aces from Rachel Holloway as Nebraska went up 7-2. San Diego managed only three points on serve in the game, which Pavan dominated with seven kills.
The Huskers built a 27-10 lead en route to closing out the match with a easy win in game three.
Freshman Kori Cooper finished with nine kills for Nebraska, which outhit the Toreros .379-.055. Jordan Larson added eight kills.
Defensively, Dani Busboom had 10 digs and Cooper had a hand in six of Nebraska’s 12 blocks.
