No. 98 Ian Campbell, 6-5, 232, defensive end

Campbell, a sophomore who came to Kansas State as a walk-on, has captured the attention of Nebraska coaches.

“He’s very athletic and has a real hot motor,” Nebraska tight ends coach Shawn Watson said. “He plays awfully fast, and that’s the thing that impresses you most about him. He uses his hands really well — he’s a real good leverage player. He bends and runs to the ball.”

A native of Garden City, Kan., Campbell has 30 tackles, second-most among Big 12 defensive linemen, with 10 coming behind the line of scrimmage. What’s more, he ranks sixth nationally and second in the league with his average of 1.08 sacks per game playing in a system that wants its ends to be speed rushers.

In Kansas State’s marquee game to date — a 24-6 home loss to Louisville — Campbell recorded seven tackles, including two sacks.

After appearing in 10 of 11 games last season, Campbell received the team’s Purple Pride Award as top walk-on. He was put on scholarship this past spring. In addition to his athleticism, Watson said, Campbell appears to be detail-oriented.

“I can see how he’s gotten himself on the field.”
