Husker Football Notebook, 9/29: Recruits expected Saturday

Although the list of official visitors is fluid, it’s become clear that Nebraska has planned a significant recruiting weekend at Memorial Stadium.
The Huskers are expected to play host to at least eight prospects, including a quartet of Rivals.com four-star players.
The four-star recruits expected to be on hand for 21st-ranked Nebraska’s game against Kansas: Akeem Auguste, a cornerback from Hollywood, Fla.; Jeremy Kerley, an “athlete” from Hutto, Texas; Blake Lawrence, an outside linebacker from Overland Park, Kan.; and Armando Murillo, a cornerback from Eastern Arizona Community College.
Kerley reportedly has committed to Texas Christian, although it’s regarded as a “soft” commitment.
Auguste — who has gotten scholarship offers from Florida, Florida State, South Carolina and Auburn, among others — is expected to arrive with high school teammate Eain Smith, a highly recruited safety prospect.
NU coach Bill Callahan said working out logistics for recruiting visits can be difficult in part because players’ parents also are involved.
“We prefer the parents to come in with recruits on official visits,” Callahan said.
At least four of this weekend’s visitors are defensive backs.
Nebraska currently has 10 verbal commitments from players for the class of 2007, including three defensive backs.
MANN UPDATE: Nebraska center Kurt Mann is working with the team’s strength staff to regain the conditioning needed to resume practicing, Callahan said. A senior from Grand Island, Mann has missed the past three games because of mononucleosis. “We’re just trying to get him back to the point where he can get his energy back,” the coach said. “As soon as he’s ready, I’m sure the doctor will release him (to practice). But right now, we’re trying to get him to regain his strength and get his weight back.” Callahan was uncertain how much weight Mann lost during his illness.
INJURY UPDATE: Husker backup linebackers Steve Octavien and Clayton Sievers both will miss their second straight game because of injuries. Meanwhile, running back Cody Glenn, who returned to practice Wednesday after missing last week’s win against Troy because of a hamstring injury, was again moving well Thursday and is set to return to action against Kansas.
STEW’S NEW ’DO: Nebraska strongside linebacker Stewart Bradley has vowed to not cut his long and wavy hair this season. That doesn’t mean he can’t alter his look. Bradley on Thursday sported cornrows. “I think he was hiding it from me today,” Callahan said. “He kept his helmet on the whole time.”
