Ranchers in Nebraska can graze cattle on Conservation Reserve Program acres through Nov. 10, U.S. Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns said.

The usual deadline for such emergency drough grazing to end is Sept. 30.

“Extremely dry weather conditions have created real hardships for farmers and ranchers in many parts of the country this year,” Johanns said. “This emergency relief measure will provide feed and forage to producers who have lost hay stocks and grazing lands because of drought.”

Deadlines for 29 other states, including Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, North Dakota and South Dakota, also were extended to between Oct. 20 and Nov. 30. Emergency haying of CRP land still ends Sept. 30.

The voluntary CRP program gives farmers and ranchers payments to set aside farm or ranch land for conservation.
