Brett Byford, NU center

Sorry about the pun, but Byford, who was filling in for the ill Kurt Mann, was definitely the center of attention with Husker fans coming into Saturday’s game. It should be considered a high compliment that on a rainy afternoon the junior from Hartselle, Ala., handled his duties so well that he became an afterthought.

Tierre Green, NU strong safety

Green appears to be growing nicely into his role as strong safety. The junior had five unassisted tackles Saturday — all in the first half — and also had a 23-yard kickoff return. “He has a very good grasp of what we’re doing defensively,” said NU defensive coordinator Kevin Cosgrove. “He has a tremendous attitude toward special teams.“

Marlon Lucky, NU running back

Coaches won’t say it, but I will: Lucky looks to be establishing himself as the best of NU’s four talented I-backs. At some point soon, he will start breaking off long runs. “He’s getting a good feel for the offense and the running attack,” coach Bill Callahan said. “He’s making better use of his blockers.” The kid’s good and getting better.

Maurice Purify, NU receiver

You’ve got to like what you’ve seen from Purify, even if he’s not been used very much these first two games. It’s easy to wonder if that’s because coaches are trying to keep him under wraps, but receivers coach Ted Gilmore said they don’t want to rush him. In any case, Purify has remained patient, and said he’s ready for a breakout game next week.
