Nebraska expects to play host to at least three recruits making official visits this weekend.

That is a relatively light load compared to last season’s game weekends, when the Huskers at times would play host to as many as nine recruits at a time.

Nebraska coach Bill Callahan said Thursday the Huskers still plan to have as many recruits in during the season as they did last season.

“We just want to bring them in a little later during the conference schedule,” he said. “We’ll still bring in the same number of guys — that’s still our goal.”

Topping the list of scheduled visitors this weekend is Roy Helu, a 5-foot-11, 206-pound running back from Danville, Calif. In addition to Nebraska, Helu has received scholarship offers from Oregon, Brigham Young and California.

Quentin Castille, a 6-1, 235-pound fullback from La Porte, Texas, also is expected to visit this weekend. He has received offers from several schools, including Nebraska, Louisville, Michigan State, Georgia Tech, Iowa State and Texas-El Paso.

Tight end Ryan Hill of Arvada, Colo., who has already committed to Nebraska’s class of 2007, also will make his official visit this weekend.

n MUELLER INJURY UPDATE: Third-string tight end Josh Mueller, a junior from Columbus, returned to practice Thursday after missing Wednesday with a sore back. “We just tried to back him down and not exert him too much,” Callahan said. “He should be fine for Saturday’s game. We’ll take it day by day and see how he responds (today) when he wakes up.” Mueller was listed third this week on the season-opening depth chart behind Matt Herian and J.B. Phillips. If Mueller is unable to play, NU may turn to Justin Tomerlin, who’s recovering from a shoulder injury. Through the course of preseason camp, the Huskers suffered only one major injury — senior cornerback Zack Bowman’s season-ending torn anterior cruciate ligament.

n EXCITEMENT IN AIR: Because of continuing construction in Memorial Stadium — don’t worry, it’s nearly finished — media members on hand for Thursday’s practice were barred from seeing the field and instead interviewed Callahan in the West Stadium lobby. The coach said his players are excited to emerge from the tunnel in the northwest part of the stadium after emerging from the southwest corner for the past several years. “It’s going to be fun,” Callahan said. “I think the fans are going to be just enthralled by what’s going to occur Saturday. I think the administration has some great things planned for the fans. They’re going to enjoy every bit of the new tunnel walk. Our players are truly excited about it.”
