The Lincoln Police Department’s “Party Patrol” had a busy weekend. Officer Katherine Finnell said police issued double the tickets Friday and Saturday than they did for the same weekend in 2005.

Citywide party disturbance calls were down to 42, however, compared with 51 complaints made the previous weekend.

A group of officers, designated the “Party Patrol,” devoted special attention to responding to party complaints and looking for parties in Northwest and Central Lincoln both nights. In all, they issued an “incredibly high” 164 citations, compared with 75 tickets for the first weekend of last year’s college term, Finnell said.

Of the 164 citations issued, 91 went to minors accused of being in possession of alcohol, nine went to people with open alcohol containers, and another nine to people maintaining a disorderly house. Eight were accused of procuring alcohol to minors.

The “Party Patrol” is part of a larger effort, including increased penalties for maintaining a disorderly house and collaboration between the campuses and the city, encouraging students to adopt practices that prevent their parties from becoming disruptive to neighbors.

" Jeez, in Vermont they can run around naked in oublic if they feel like it, here they can't even have a party! This is just a smokescreen to make the police look busy. Leave the poor kids alone, They grow out of it. And to those of you who complain...didn't any of you party in college? Get a hobby, or complain about the neighbor's cat in your birdfeeder. "

" Police should be doing policing. Aren't most of these kids just partying to make friends. Instead of citing them, we as a city that hosts the University should be trying to educate kids into drinking smart. Having the police show up and ticketing guest doesn't help anyone. Teaching our finest (which is supposed to be who are at Universities) should be the goal. I worry that what will continue will be kids drinking as fast as they can as much as they can in a short period of time and then driving home. Why not allow kids now a days a bit of slack (I know the residents don't like that but for 30 years the Russian Bottoms and areas around the U, have been a rental areas) Wouldn't it be better to have a group of caring citizens to walk around these areas asking people to quite down, make sure people don't drive, offer rides and just be a bit more friendly. Police crackdowns never work. They only cause more headache. Our Jails are full. Locking people away for ticketing them is not the answer. Kids will be kids. Just let's make the parties as safe as possible. Let's teach our kids how to drink safe. Then perhaps the area will be a bit more quite and safe. "

" I was a "College Party" regular not that long ago. The parties getting busted are huge mega parties with mostly underage drinkers. This is the police doing their job. I went to the cool chill invite only shin-digs. These are $5 at the door for 2-3 kegs of super cheap beer rivaled only by the fraternities. If I was a neighbor and someone was urinating on my property I'd call the police after I did a little vigilantee justice of my own. So anyone getting a ticket should count themselves lucky they don't live by me. "

" RB you are acting like these kids are adults. I don't know if you have seen a college party lately but when you give a lot of alcohol to a kid, he really isn't in a position where he's going to listen to someone telling him to quiet down. And your thinking that we should allow them to drink and not ticket them because they will end up drinking faster is a little off too. Most of these kids are going to drink all night long at this party and then if it gets busted they will move on to another party, most likely going to bed around 3:00am. Giving them a ticket is about the only way to make them "think a little" the next time they go out. "

" Sounds like RB wants the City to put a huge bandaid on a problem that's been around for quite some time. I for one am thankful that the LPD is out in force giving citations. Zero tolerance should be the policy. I reside in a neighborhood that is a common ground for loud parties/gatherings and I pay enough in taxes that I shouldn't be forced to live in an environment that consists of unruly, disrespectful party goers. In my day, I also went to my share of gatherings, however, I did not urinate in someone's yard; I prefer squatting when out in the wilderness when no bathroom is available and I didn't partake in underage drinking. My parents taught me better than that. It's called respect, something that is getting to be a lost quality. Thankfully, I still have mine. "

" They may be kids now, but what's the excuse when they're adults and continue the same behavior. We had a party house across the street from us for awhile. One night they had over 100 people over. We had all kinds of trash thrown all over the place--beer bottles, beer cans, uneaten fastfood, and anything else they were too lazy to throw away. These kids also kept the party going to 3 a.m. or later. We had to go and tell them several times to get their cars out of our driveway. The first time they wouldn't even answer the door, so I had to call the police to come and remove the car. What if there had been an emergency and I would have needed to get out of my driveway? Of course, the public urination is downright disgusting. The landlord of our party house finally got wise and had the house repaired and sold it. I applaud the Lincoln Police for their efforts. The partygoers deserve more than they're getting. "

" I think the police should respond to complaint calls but driving through neighborhoods listening for loud music and voices heard from the streets sounds a bit like a police state doesn't it? There are more important crimes to respond to then driving around aimlessly looking for partiers to bust. The police already have too long of a response time to calls. If you don't want kids partying, close down the University, problem solved. "

" I understand the frustration from all the neighbors of these party houses. Maybe we should be lobbying for stricter city ordianances on All rental properties. Holding the leasee and leasor's more liable for what happens on the property. Is this problem really new or something thats been happening for decades. I know from experience its been happening for at least 30 years. hmmmm this seems like the new typical theme Not In My Backyard. "

" We used to have Sat. night parties. 6 or 8 of us got together, watched movies and drank beer. These aren't parties. They are (dis)organized chaos, with potential for disaster. So I guess it is okay, until it is in your neighborhood, or until someone you know and love is shot, or dies of alcohol posioning. Then what? C.h., and everyone else who thinks we should leave these "kids" alone, how would you feel then? Parents, let your kids know if they get tickets or are arrested for this, they are on their own. Maybe then they will be a little more responsible. "

" Amazing. Who would stand up for the drunks that one day will be your Boss. The University is a higher place of learning for the youth of today that want to be your Alcoholic Boss of tomorrow. Please let me go to school and become a party animal so that I can become a business animal and then profess that drinking is the wrong thing to do. I suppose that most of the party animals end up becoming "Engineers" and going to work for the City of Lincoln Public Works Engineering Department. "

" I think people who haven't got a clue as to what an extremely complex policing is should get a clue. Maybe you should study hard, get a degree and become the police chief so you can dictate what your officers do! I get sick of people ranting about what the police do and don't do. Walk a mile in their shoes! "
