The Nebraska State Fair Board has decided to offer Husker football fans free admission to the fair after Saturday’s game against Louisiana Tech.

People leaving the football game will be let in at State Fair Park simply on the basis of showing their football ticket stub.

Some fair board members gathered for a special Friday meeting were uncertain what to expect from offering free entry to such a large potential audience. But Sallie Atkins of Halsey and Van Neidig of Battle Creek were not among them.

Atkins called not reaching out to the football crowd “a missed opportunity” and Neidig put the point even more strongly.

“I think the single best thing that could happen is if we are overwhelmed by 80,000 people,” he said.

" It's time the Fair start taking advantage of oportunities to increase attendance. "

" Nice, very nice. Veterans (with ID) get three bucks off of admission on September 1st. Well done State Fair board. You've really shown what you think about those who have served their country. "

" It may be a way to increase fair attendance, but incredibly unfair for the majority of Nebraskans who have no opportunity to get Husker football tickets even if they wanted them. Why not make admission free for EVERYONE the weekend of the game? That would take advantage of the game crowd, AND may draw more folks who wouldn't otherwise come. Otherwise, now that the State Fair is partially supported by tax dollars, what this amounts to is a free ride for the fortunate few whose families have had season football tickets for decades, paid for by the rest of the state who cannot afford/cannot get football tickets. I coughed up my forty bucks for entrance fee and food for the fair this weekend to support it--seems only fair that either football goers do the same, OR we give everyone a break. "

" Nice point, Sean!! The State Fair is a waste of time and money. Quite a few states have done away with them because they cost more than they bring in. A simple economic no-no. I'm so tired of hearing everyone talk about it as if it were a golden nugget. There's always an excuse to keep it, but I'm tired of paying for it!! "

" Keep in mind that the football fans get in AFTER the game and not all day so it isn't a free DAY at the fair with a ticket stub. Still it is a good way to draw in some more people to spend money in support of the State Fair. "

" Frankly, it seems the accounting of the fiar grounds and horse racing is hard to comprehend. The fair board has yet to come up with a reasonable itemized statement of earning and payments. There needs to be some additional oversight since taxpayer dollars are being used. Doesn't anyone else find it puzzling there is gambling going on at state fair park, gambling, which has proven to be very profitable, yet the facilities are in shambles. That track should be rebuilt and modernized. It's no secret the fair grounds have been mismanaged and ill maintained. For goodness sakes, get some contracts for business in there and start making money off these college kids that are just down the street. In the current state of operation, this thing is costing more that what it is worth and breaking even is not good enough. if the thing cannot make money, let Omaha have the state fair!! Then we can find something profitable to do with the land. "
