City Council overrides veto on concealed guns
By The Associated Press
OMAHA — People who pass official muster will be able to carry concealed guns in Omaha, after all.
The Omaha City Council voted 5 to 2 Tuesday to override Mayor Mike Fahey’s veto of a new ordinance. The new measure reverses the city’s longtime ban on concealed weapons.
The state Legislature this year passed a measure allowing concealed weapons.
The law, which takes effect Jan. 1, allows cities to ban concealed weapons within their boundaries.
It also requires applicants to pass a background check and complete a handgun training and safety course. The permit will cost $100 and be valid for five years. Convicted felons will not be allowed permits.
Concealed weapons will not be allowed in a variety of places, including bars, police stations, public meetings, athletic events, schools, churches, hospitals and banks. Signs also could be posted prohibiting the carrying of concealed weapons in other locations.
It was estimated that licenses could be granted to more than 64,000 people in Nebraska.
