UNL, UNO plan King events

A man who marched with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the 1960s will give the keynote address at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s week-long celebration of the national holiday celebrating King.

John Slade, who produced the film, “Breaking the Chains of Bondage,” will deliver “Martin Luther King Jr.: The Man and His Message” during the Chancellor’s Program at 2 p.m. Jan. 16 at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center, 313 N. 13th St.

Slade was a founding member of Iota Phi Theta fraternity in 1963 at Morgan State College (now Morgan State University) in Baltimore.

During the program, Chancellor Harvey Perlman will present the 2006 “Fulfilling the Dream” awards to those who have contributed to the UNL community or the wider Lincoln community by promoting the goals and vision of King.

The program and reception that follows in the adjacent Van Brunt Visitors Center are free and open to the public.

The program kicks off a week of activities at the university.

Unless otherwise noted, all are in the Nebraska Union, 1400 R St., and are free and open to the public.

The other events are:

n Jan. 17-20 — 8 a.m.-8 p.m., interactive display in Rotunda Gallery, “How Are you Living the Dream?”; 10 a.m.-3 p.m., display in the Alcove, “The Life and Times of Bayard Rustin.”

n Jan. 17 — 12:30 p.m., brown-bag lecture, “Free Speech???” Bob Wolfson, Plains States regional director of the Anti-Defamation League; 7 p.m., video, “Negros with Guns,” Slade, moderator.

n Jan. 18 — 12:30 p.m., brown-bag lecture, “Race, Poverty and Katrina: Roots of the Poor in the South,” Meghan Winchell, assistant professor of history at Nebraska Wesleyan and state coordinator of National History Day; 2 p.m., video, “Race is the Place”; 7 p.m., Standing Bear program, Judi gaiashkibos, executive director of Nebraska Commission on Indian Affairs, College of Law, East Campus Loop and Fair Street.

n Jan. 19 — 11 a.m., brown-bag play, “Big Words, Strong Words,” directed by Willy Banks; 2 p.m., lecture, “Continuing the Fight,” Kalenda C. Eaton, assistant professor of English and ethnic studies at UNL.

n Jan. 20 — 12:30 p.m., brown-bag panel, “Students of Color Share Experiences on a Predominantly White Campus.”

n Jan. 21 — 6:30 p.m., 11th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Banquet, hosted by Afrikan People’s Union student organization; keynote speaker Nikki Giovanni, black American poet; tickets on sale Jan. 11-20 at Nebraska Union Information Desk.

UNO to commemorate King with Jan. 18 celebration

The life and legacy of King will be highlighted Jan. 18 during a celebration at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. The event will begin at noon in the Milo Bail Student Center Ballroom.This year’s celebration will include a keynote address by Joao Brito, UNO graduate student from Brazil.

Tickets are on sale through Friday, Jan 13. They are $3 for students, $5 for faculty and staff and $7 for the public. No tickets will be available at the door. Tickets must be purchased in advance from the MBSC Business Office or by calling (402) 554-2979.
