Turkeys hide in plain sight

With Thanksgiving near, you’d think wild turkeys would have more sense than to show up in the city. But Friday, a flock of turkeys roosted in the Country Club neighborhood. They’ve been spotted elsewhere in Lincoln, too.
Animal Control director Jim Weverka said some showed up in a neighbor’s yard in west Lincoln. “We’ve been getting reports for years, but this was the first time they were in my neighborhood.”
Why are they flocking to town? Well, it’s hunting season. But there might be other explanations. “I think it’s cover,” he said. “Cover is disappearing from the fields.”
Also, the population has increased 300 percent in four years, according to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.
What should you do if you spot a turkey in your yard? “Just leave them alone and they will keep moving,” Weverka said.
And please, don’t feed them. “We want them to move back out of town. That’s the safest place for them.”
Especially with Turkey Day around the corner.
