Just for parents: Books and more
Remember Grandparents Day
Sunday is National Grandparents Day, a day set aside to honor grandparents and give grandparents the opportunity to show their love for their children’s children. The day was also created with the idea that children can learn about strength, heritage and guidance older people can offer.
If you’re looking for a gift for Grandma, consider the recently released “Chicken Soup for the Grandma’s Soul” (Health Communications Inc., $12.95). Compiled by Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen and LeAnn Thieman, the book is filled with stories about the ageless loves of grandmothers from “Nana-to-be” to grandmother veteran.
Help kids remember their lessons
“America” is the latest CD from Teacher and the Rockbots, an educational music group devoted to helping children remember their academic lessons.
The 12-song CD reinforces history and government lessons in a kid-friendly way with humor, modern rock music and commentary from a robot. It’s 21st-century “Schoolhouse Rock” using the same premise that music turns into a game filled with clues. Other CDs from the group include “Science” and “Multiplication.” Each CD sells for $12.97. CDs are available online at www.teacherandtherockbots or (800) BUY-MY-CD.
Pregnant and blue
Prenatal depression — depression during pregnancy — is at least as prevalent as postpartum depression, according to Dr. Shaila Kulkarni Misri, yet there is little mention of what she calls a major health issue.
Her book “Pregnancy Blues: What Every Woman Needs to Know About Depression During Pregnancy” (Delacorte Press, $23 hardcover) provides women with the knowledge they need about prenatal depression, how to manage it and knowledge that they are not alone.
Health organizer
Laura Heuer considered herself an ordinary mom until the day her son got strep throat and had a severe allergic reaction to the antibiotic he was on. And the next antibiotic, and the next, and the next …
She needed a way to keep all his pertinent health information organized and handy.
She created the Jakoter Health Organizer ($34.95), a sturdy, 75-page ring-binder system that helps you sort and record important information about your family medical history, health conditions and more. It includes 13 labeled pocket folders for your medical paperwork — test results, letters from your doctor, bills and receipts, etc. You also get a variety of forms for recording questions to ask your doctor, major health events, information about your appointments and even how you have been feeling lately. The organizer is customizable to your family and its needs.
Available online at www.jakoter.com.
