Tom Janssen, former state director for Sen. Chuck Hagel, will return to the senator's staff as deputy chief of staff, based in Omaha.

Janssen will manage all policy and administrative issues as they relate to Nebraska, Hagel announced Monday.

Janssen succeeds Bill Protexter, who will leave his post as Hagel's state director to open his own government affairs consulting business in Omaha.

A native of Crofton, Janssen served as Hagel's state director from 1997 to 2003.  He was organizational director of Hagel's 1996 campaign for the Senate and served as campaign manager when the senator was re-elected in 2002.

Janssen, who has been director of corporate development for Kiewit Corp., in Omaha, will rejoin Hagel's staff after Labor Day.
