Letters, 7/21: Why no criminal charge?
Excuse me! What is the thinking behind Fairbury Police Chief Rick Carmichael's statement that he did not expect any criminal charges to be filed against the driver of the Handi-Bus who locked in his van a 90-year-old woman for 10 hours?
How could the driver forget that he did not drop off the woman at her home? He had been driving her to the seniors' dining for some time, and she was always his last stop. Why did he say he remembered watching her walk to her house and then change his story?
This ranks right up there with the parents who forget their children are in the car, lock it, and then go to work for eight hours.
Maybe Police Chief Carmichael and the van driver need to spend 10 hours locked in the same van.
Life endangerment is criminal.

Rove can turn to religion
Karl Rove? Guilty? Ha! They won't lay a glove on him. He and the rest of George Bush & Co. will put a spin on this and sell it to the people that this poor man is more to be pitied than censured.
But if all else fails, he can turn to religion. The magic words are "born-again Christian." That will get all the Bible Belt bubbas on his side.

‘They' say a lot of things
The GOP talking points say Valerie Plame, the wife of Joseph Wilson, was not covert, when in fact she was.
They say Karl Rove didn't leak her name, when in fact her name was not the secret, her identity was, and that's what Karl Rove leaked.
They claim Karl Rove didn't know Valerie Plame was covert, so why doesn't he state this for the record?
They say the Butler Report vindicated President Bush's State of the Union claim of Saddam seeking uranium in Africa, when in fact the Butler Report was a whitewash intended to exonerate Tony Blair and George Bush by excluding information which showed such Saddam-seeking-uranium claims to be false.
They claim Karl Rove isn't a target of Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald's investigation, when in fact he is a subject of the investigation.
They say the White House and the GOP can't comment because of the ongoing investigation, when in fact they felt free to call the questions regarding Rove and his role "totally ridiculous" until the latest story broke.
They say a lot of things, all of them lies, and when they run out of lies, all they have to say is "no comment."

Blind to animal abuse
After reading the July 13 Lincoln Journal Star article on alleged abuse and neglect of Barry Lake's horses, I am sure that all those animals feel much better that "it's not even a problem anymore." Try that defense for a child abused, an assault victim or a person that has been raped.
It is an atrocity that the Racing Commission was apprised of the situation and refused to get involved. Promises were made early on, but they backed out of the investigation. They turned a blind eye and in doing so sanctioned abuse.
It's time that Nebraskans realize animal abuse/neglect is alive and growing. This is not an isolated case, just the tip of a very large problem that no one, including law enforcement, wants to address. People don't want to believe animal abuse exists. They turn a blind eye and don't want to get involved. They can't or won't believe that their neighbor, attorney, friend, etc., might abuse and kill animals.
I look forward to attending the Sept. 15 trial. I will not be alone. Awareness is beginning to grow, thanks to the media. I might be called one of those "damned animal activists," a compliment of the highest order, but our numbers are growing. We will be there to represent those abused and dead horses. May justice be served for those who cannot speak for themselves.
