Northwest Airlines raised most of its fares, Thursday, matching a $5 one-way increase American Airlines introduced a day earlier, said spokesman Kurt Ebenhoch.
Competitors' moves and rising oil prices were factors in the decision to raise fares, he said. Northwest Airlink flights from Lincoln to its hubs in Minneapolis/St. Paul, Detroit and Memphis are will include the higher cost, he said.
Northwest's latest fare increases began Wednesday night, when the airline implemented a 3 percent hike, said fare expert Terry Trippler. United Airlines announced a 3 percent increase earlier Wednesday.
Northwest withdrew the 3 percent hike Thursday morning, said Ebenhoch, and replaced it with the $5 ($10 roundtrip) hike. American Airlines rersponded earlier to United with a $5 change.
According to Trippler, seven airlines have raised fares this week, including America West and Continental Airlines Thursday.
The Northwest Web site Thursday showed a fare of $305.90 for a roundtrip ticket to Detroit from Lincoln purchased two weeks in advance.
