Eight local nonprofit organizations recently received a combined  $68,839 in funding from the Lincoln Community Foundation.

The money is to be used to help the organizations fund capital improvements, such as new construction or additions, renovation or purchase of existing facilities and/or the purchase of equipment, including furnishings and computer equipment.

This was the foundation's third and final grant cycle of 2004.

The Lincoln Community Foundation serves as a conduit between individual donors and their preferred charitable causes in ways that foster increased charitable giving and provide donors with maximum tax benefits.

Organizations that received funding include the following:

CenterPointe, $12,000: To purchase a walk-in cooler/freezer for the kitchen in its new facility, which will be located at North 26th and P streets. The new building will house adult residential treatment services and administrative offices. Each day, CenterPointe prepares between 160-175 meals for people receiving treatment services.

Christian Heritage Children's Homes, $10,000: To support the construction of the office/family training center, which will be near the corner of South 148th Street and Old Cheney Road. The family training center will play an instrumental role in addressing child abuse, neglect and delinquency.

Folsom Children's Zoo, $8,000: To support the creation of a new interactive nest and egg exhibit at the zoo. Once the exhibit is built, this educational play area will encourage children to role-play by hatching out of the eggs and taking flight.

Friendship Home, $6,839: To line in-soffit gutters and renovate a bathroom to accommodate the expected increase in the number of beds at the original shelter.

Lincoln Parks and Recreation Department, $10,000: To add a computer learning lab and furnishings in the Youth Involvement Center, which will be located at Park Middle School. This center will accommodate middle school students with no place to go after school.

Lincoln Parks and Recreation Foundation (acting as fiscal agent for the Veterans Memorial Garden) $4,500: To install a cover for backflow pipes and valves at Veterans Memorial Garden, helping to beautify this community space that honors those who served.

Malone Community Center, $7,500: To update the restrooms in the facility so they comply with federal laws about access for disabled patrons and improve the facility's physical appearance.

Mediation Center, $10,000: To purchase furniture for the Mediation Center offices.
