Lancaster County prosecutors Wednesday dropped a firearms charge against a Lincoln man connected with the fatal shooting of 19-year-old Lerodrick Johns.

Jemaine Sidney, 18, had been charged with shooting a firearm into an occupied vehicle. Johns was a passenger in the vehicle and was struck by a bullet.

A woman drove the victim to a Lincoln hospital, where he died from a single gunshot wound to the chest.

Prosecutors have alleged Lerodrick Johns' brother, Kevin Johns, 25, drove his car into the driveway at 731 S. 21st St. and fired one shot at a person standing on exterior steps of the duplex.

The person, Sidney, returned fire.

Prosecutors said Wednesday they decided to dismiss the charge against Sidney because they believed they could not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that he did not shoot in self defense.

Deputy Lancaster County Attorney Jim Rocke said his office could file new charges against Sidney if  new information in the case warrants the charges.

Kevin Johns is charged with shooting into a dwelling.
