State Fire Marshal Dennis Hohbein says his office has no plans to take enforcement action on a ban of grill use at apartment buildings in Nebraska.

Hohbein said in a statement that his office and that of the governor are working to resolve issues with the ban that was to take effect Thursday. Under the new state fire code, gas-fired, hibachi and similar grills operated on balconies or under any overhang were to be banned. Electric grills were not included in the ban.

The fire marshal said the regulation was a small part of some 300 pages of regulations. But he says numerous phone calls with concerns have led to his office stepping back to reassess the changes.

The new regulations comply with fire codes adopted by federal officials. Charcoal grills have not been allowed on balconies since 2000 and gas grills with tanks holding more than a pound of propane have been banned since 1992.

However, many people are not aware of those restrictions.
