Top units on same team for Red-White game

Nebraska's No. 1 offensive unit and No. 1 defensive unit won't face each other in Saturday's Red-White game.

Nebraska Coach Bill Callahan said Monday those units will be on the same team, facing the second and third-string units.

"Ididn't want to break the team," Callahan said. "In our first year, it's important to us that we maintain confidence and continuity. What I don't want to do is split the team or divide any confidence we have in rhythm, and also in execution."

Callahan said quarterback Joe Dailey will take the majority of snaps with the first unit, with backups Mike Stuntz and Garth Glissman leading the second- and third-team offenses.

The game will feature two 15-minute regulation quarters in the first half and a running clock with two 12-minute quarters in the second half.

n "GAMEDAY" IN TOWN: ESPN's "College GameDay" crew attended Monday's practice at Cook Pavilion to work on a preseason special that will probably air in June, bureau producer Jim Witalka said. Announcer Kirk Herbstreit visited with Callahan prior to practice and attended part of the workout, while a film crew filmed the Huskers in action throughout the practice. Callahan wore a microphone for part of the practice. The first-year coach and his West Coast offense have generated much national media interest this spring. Writers from Sports Illustrated, The Sporting News, The Sacramento Bee and The Rocky Mountain News have also visited. "It's not me. It's Nebraska," Callahan said of the attention. "I think it's what Nebraska means and what it stands for. The coverage is a reflection of the success they've had here in the past and the success they expect in the future."

n GOOD PRACTICE: Callahan said Monday's indoor practice was good, noting the team came off a two-day rest fresh and rejuvenated and had a spirited workout. The team conducted a goal-line scrimmage. "It was a very competitive drill,"Callahan said. "I'm still annoyed at the fumbled exchanges that we have. We had two fumbled snaps down there that have to be eliminated." Receivers Ross Pilkington (hamstring)and Isaiah Fluellen (hamstring) practiced but were unable to finish, Callahan said. Among former players in attendance were Matt Davison and Jammal Lord.

n RESERVING OPINION: For those of you expecting to analyze an updated depth chart the week after the spring game, hold on. Callahan said such a depth chart might not be formed for a few weeks. He said it's not worthwhile to make immediate reactions to personnel. "It's always good to reserve your opinion on evaluation until after you've had time to get the emotion out of your coaching," Callahan said. "I learned that in professional football. I always recommended to our coaches to take a month off, come back, look at the film and look at it from a different perspective."

n GAME WEBCAST: Saturday's Red-White game will be webcast live on Huskers.com, and will be available to subscribers of the premium Web site. The webcast, which begins at noon, will include play-by-play and commentary by Jim Rose and Adrian Fiala. The Red-White game kicks off at 12:30 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.
