South Dakota State University (SDSU) in Brookings, SD has selected 10 distinguished alumni for 2009. Sonya (Anderson)Irons was nominated under the young alumni category for dedication to her profession. Only 287 of the over 72,000 alumni of SDSU have been recognized with this kind of distinction.
Irons is a physical therapist at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital since 2004, where she is one of only 130 nationally, board-certified, cardiopulmonary physical therapists. Recently, she became the center coordinator for clinical education. Irons is an assistant clinical professor at Creighton University.
At SDSU she received a bevy of scholarships that fully paid her tuition and was selected for a half-dozen honor societies, including Phi Kappa Phi, which selects only 5 percent of the junior class nationwide.
After graduating with a perfect 4.0 in 2001, Irons spent two years at Mayo School of Health Sciences to earn her master's of physical therapy. She was one of 12 international recipients for the Golden Key Graduate Scholar Award.
Irons followed that by working as a research associate in the school of physical therapy at the University of South Dakota. Her academic and clinical background has given her the ability to present research at national conferences and publish articles in peer-reviewed journals. She has served as adjunct faculty at Southeast Community College. Irons also teaches a national board preparation course through Scorebuilders.
